Trailside Point welcomed the Phoenix Symphony to their school. Students learned about various percussion instruments before an ensemble performed for them. Students also had the opportunity to ask the musicians questions.

Sarah Steele, School Counselor at Trailside Point School, was selected by the Anti-Defamation League as the 2017 Arizona Educator of the Year.

Under Sarah’s direction, the Anti-Defamation League has seen great strides and a true commitment to integrating No Place for Hate activities through classroom discussions, family interaction and campus beautification.   She is creative in planning and engages students in the No Place for Hate activity process. Additionally, she collaborates with teachers and staff to incorporate No Place for Hate in ways that support their classroom priorities.  Sarah and her student team envision activities and then package them into simple, but complete packages for classroom teachers.

Laveen’s Governing Board recognized her at their September meeting and presented her with a plaque.

Beginning in August 2017, Laveen schools will utilize Peachjar’s e-flyer system to distribute flyers, newsletters, and other student-centered information to parents.

E-mail blasts containing flyers from your child’s school, PTO, or non-profit student-centered activities will be sent to parents generally once a week. Flyers are maintained on a dedicated webpage for later reference.

Only school information such as school newsletters, event flyers, and PTO happenings as well as approved flyers from non-profit child-centered organizations such as Girl Scouts, ball leagues, and local community groups will be sent to the email addresses on file for each family. Parents should make sure their school office has their current email address.

Parents may sign up for a free Peachjar account to utilize added features, like combining schools. But, this is not necessary to receive flyers.

Laveen is implementing a new bus pass system for the 2017-18 school year. Because safety is a primary concern of the Laveen School District, this bus pass system will tell our dispatchers if a student was on board and where they exited.

All school buses will be equipped with electronic card readers; new student ID badges that contain a chip will be issued to all bus riders. As students board and exit the bus, he or she will tap their badge against the reader. A green light will illuminate on the reader if the swipe is successful.

While these two measures won’t be fully implemented until August 2017, our front office staff is currently preparing for the new procedures which will take effect May 15, 2017. Transportation labels will be affixed to student badges. This label will contain the student’s route number and bus stop location. In the event a student boards the wrong bus or is unsure as to where they should exit, the bus driver can easily look at the sticker and ensure the student is where they should be.

As these two phases are implemented, it will be important that your child have their badge with them each day. We will never leave a student at the bus stop in the morning and will bring all students to school. However, a student who has forgotten their badge must report to their school office for a temporary pass for the ride home.

The Phoenix Symphony visited Trailside Point as part of the organization’s Mind Over Music program. The program studies how music affects student achievement and provides tools for teachers to integrate music into the core academic areas. Symphony musicians performed for the school’s advanced and junior orchestras, while providing short lessons between each piece.

Trailside Point’s new 2,500 square foot performing arts classroom opened for the spring semester. The facility will be used for theater classes and performances of all kinds including music, dance, and drama.

Trailside Point received a $4,000 grant from bestselling author James Patterson to support its school library. Since 2015, Patterson has donated $3.5 million to save school libraries nationwide. “I’ve made it my mission to underscore the vital role reading plays in children’s lives, and the need to sustain school libraries is at the heart of that mission,” said Patterson.

In addition, Scholastic Reading Club will match each dollar with bonus points that teachers can use to acquire books and other materials.

Applying schools were asked to share the story of their school library, including past efforts to make improvements and ideas to help create a brighter future. Patterson personally read and selected the winning recipients of the grants. Trailside will use the funds to buy more books, obtain library supplies, host an author visit, and create a reading area for students
